This presentation will explore the challenges associated with the investigation of the sudden, unexpected death of a nurse, in the workplace, while having patients assigned to her for care. The critical steps in the investigation will be outlined to include decedent and scene assessment and documentation, evidence collection, interviewing, review of records/documentation, as well as interaction with hospital administration and next-of-kin. We will discuss the need to “Carry On” with patient care during the “Mayday” and resuscitation efforts, as well as the emotions and biases of co-workers and investigators.
Additionally, as nurses we need to consider the “ripple effects” associated with the "Cause" and "Manner" of death and how they may need to be addressed going forward. These may include such things as staff grief counseling, policy review and/or revision, education about drug use or abuse, etc.
