There is significant variation in reported anogenital injury rates in children who are medically evaluated due to concerns for sexual abuse. The lack of agreement within the literature regarding the specificity of certain examination findings (such as erythema) for trauma or abuse is problematic. Consistent and collaborative review of photo-documentation allows forensic nurses to work towards consensus regarding anogenital assessments and the appropriate interpretation of examination findings. This photo-heavy case review centers the differentiation of anogenital injury from medical conditions or normal anatomical variants. Although the patients described are children and adolescents, this presentation could benefit all SANEs as it focuses on improving documentation surrounding assessment findings and considering the medical impression.
Learning Outcomes:
Increased knowledge about:
Differentiate normal anogenital anatomical variants from trauma and medical conditions not related to abuse.
documentation surrounding assessment findings and the generation of a medical impression surrounding documentation findings.
Gain understanding of the lack of consensus in the literature surrounding injury rates and how to address these concerns within your practice.
