Using research, images & video to explore the mysterious world of virginity, this presentation will assist clinicians and other MDT members to identify & combat longstanding & erroneous beliefs about virginity & to better understand how this construct can impact the course of CSA investigations.

Learning Outcomes:

Increased knowledge about:
  • After participating in this activity, attendees will be able to correctly identify the primary female genital structures and explain the difference between genital and vaginal penetration.
  • After participating in this activity, attendees will be able to name at least two ways the construct of virginity can adversely impact a child abuse investigation and how clinicians can combat these pervasive erroneous beliefs.
  • After participating in this activity, attendees will be able to identify three ways that a medical examination is beneficial to children reporting sexual abuse, even when there are no “findings.”
