Dr. Irene Mageto is a clinical mental health and forensic nurse specialist with fifteen years of teaching experience. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Evansville, USA, in 2006. This foundational training was further enhanced by earning a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing in 2009 and a PhD in Nursing Science with a focus on Forensic Nursing in 2015, both from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
Her career in academia started as an Assistant Lecturer at The Presbyterian University of East Africa and Kenya Methodist University, where she discovered her passion for teaching and research. After completing her PhD, she advanced to the role of Lecturer at Kenya Methodist University in February 2016. Seeking new challenges, she joined the University of Nairobi in September 2016, serving in various capacities, including Lecturer and Medical-Surgical Unit Head until August 2023.
Currently, Dr. Mageto is an Assistant Professor at The Aga Khan University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, where she leverages her extensive experience to educate and mentor future nursing professionals. Her research interests focus on the psychosocial outcomes of health problems such as HIV and cancer. She has conducted significant research and developed evidence-based interventions to support mental health services in Kenya.
Throughout her career, Dr. Mageto has been honored with several accolades, including being named Member of the Month (March 2024) by the International Association of Forensic Nursing and being ranked among the Top 5000 Researchers in Kenya by the World Scientist and University Rankings in 2023. Her contributions to teaching and leadership were recognized with a Dean’s commendation in 2022.
With her comprehensive training and practical experience in mental health and forensic nursing, Dr. Mageto is well-positioned to serve as a co-investigator on grants aimed at improving HIV treatment outcomes among youth in low and middle-income countries.
