Associate Professor
Boise State University
Boise, ID
I completed my doctoral degree in nursing with an emphasis on health policy at the University of New Mexico in 2016. I am an Associate Professor with the School of Nursing at Boise State University and currently practice as a FNP at a rural public health district. I began my career at Boise State University in 2005 and have taught a variety of courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. I currently teach in both our AGNP and FNP Masters and Doctoral Programs. My research interests include health policy, rural health, and vulnerable populations. I have completed research exploring frontier grandparents raising grandchildren and several projects involving rural nursing workforce issues. I served as a Primary Investigator on a research project that culminated in the development of the Nursing Community Apgar Questionnaire (NCAQ). The NCAQ is a tool that Critical Access Hospitals can utilize to evaluate and enhance their rural nurse recruitment and retention efforts. My work on this topic is interdisciplinary as I collaborate closely with colleagues at Boise State University’s Center for Health Policy. I also work with colleagues at the Center for Health Policy as PI on an evaluation team for the Title V Maternal Child Health Block Grant. Ongoing multidisciplinary collaboration is key to my research trajectory as I continue my efforts to address rural workforce issues; improve vulnerable populations’ access to care, particularly the elderly and rural communities; and illuminate the health impact of public policies. Most recently I have been exploring rural NP practices in Idaho and factors that influence rural RNs’ decisions whether or not to become NPs. In my free time I enjoy hiking in the foothills with my dog and husband, traveling and reading.
