Dr. Julie L. Valentine joined the University of Utah College of Nursing in October 2023 as a Professor and assumed the prestigious Ida May “Dotty” Barnes RN and D. Keith Barnes MD Presidential Endowed Chair in December 2023. Dedicated to combating sexual and gender-based violence, Dr. Valentine leverages her extensive clinical experience as a certified sexual assault nurse examiner to inform interdisciplinary practices and policies, with a profound commitment to enhancing the criminal justice system's response. Her ultimate professional objective is to significantly reduce instances of sexual and gender-based violence.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Valentine has secured four federal grants since 2015, totaling over four million dollars, underscoring her significant contributions to the field. She holds leadership positions at the state, national, and international levels, actively shaping best practice recommendations to mitigate violence and improve survivor care. As the lead author of The Constructed Theory of Forensic Nursing Care, a groundbreaking middle-range theory, Dr. Valentine guides forensic nursing education, practice, and research.

Dr. Valentine’s current research projects include the following topics: intimate partner violence medical forensic examinations, dating app facilitated sexual assaults, forensic nursing quality indicators, strangulation in gender-based violence, pain reports following sexual assault, and trauma-informed care in dentistry. Dr. Valentine has forged multiple research collaborations in Utah and throughout the United States.
