Rae H. Wooten, BSN, RN, F-ABMDI is a forensic nurse practicing in the area of death investigation. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and subsequently worked as a registered nurse in various settings before joining the Charleston County Coroner’s Office in April, 1995. After 25 years of service, she made the very difficult decision to not run for election in 2020 but continues to investigate death, serve as a consultant and teach and speak regularly to various audiences. She resides on John’s Island, outside Charleston, South Carolina.
As Coroner she investigated all types of deaths, but of particular importance was the investigation of 2 “Mass Fatality Incidences”. The 1st being the “Sofa Superstore Fire” that claimed the lives of nine firefighters and the other being the “Mother Emanuel Massacre” during which nine worshipers were shot by a lone gunman. She also worked intensely to improve Child Death Investigation and served for many years as the Coroner on the State Fatality Advisory Committee.
She remains committed to improving the quality of death investigation and patient care through education and the development of prevention programs based on research. She was awarded the “Sue Townson Award” in 2010 and the “Coroner of the Year Award” in 2012 by the South Carolina Coroners’ Association
